Mon Feb 03 08:37:30 UTC 2025: ## Shein Returns to India in Partnership with Reliance Retail

**Mumbai, India –** After a five-year absence, Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein has relaunched in India, this time in partnership with Reliance Retail, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries. The Shein India app, launched on January 27th, has already garnered over 10,000 downloads.

Shein’s previous presence in India ended in 2020 following a government ban on several Chinese apps due to security concerns. However, the Indian government clarified that while the app was blocked, the sale of Shein products was not prohibited.

This new venture sees Reliance Retail, headed by Isha Ambani, managing and operating the Shein India platform. This partnership aims to leverage India’s burgeoning fast-fashion market, projected to exceed $50 billion by 2031. Unlike Shein’s usual overseas manufacturing model, this collaboration focuses on developing an Indian e-commerce platform and establishing a network of local manufacturers and suppliers.

Crucially, the partnership agreement ensures that all data generated by the Shein India app remains within India, with Shein having no access to it. This commitment is reflected in the app’s privacy policy. The government has emphasized that the platform’s infrastructure will also be entirely based in India.

Reliance Retail’s involvement is seen as a strategic move to tap into the significant growth potential of the Indian fast-fashion market, currently dominated by players like Zudio and Myntra. The partnership also addresses previous concerns regarding data security and aligns with the government’s push for increased domestic manufacturing.
