Sun Feb 02 19:13:16 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Confident of Smooth Power Supply This Summer Despite Record Demand
**Chennai, February 3, 2025** – Tamil Nadu is expecting a smooth power supply this summer despite anticipating record-high electricity demand. The state’s peak demand is projected to reach 22,000 MW, surpassing last year’s peak of 20,830 MW. This makes Tamil Nadu the state with the highest power demand in South India.
To meet this demand, the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) is relying on its own thermal power plants (4,320 MW capacity) and a significant share of power from Central Generating Stations (CGS). This CGS share includes over 6,000 MW from sources like the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), and NTPC. Specifically, Tamil Nadu will receive 1,150 MW from KKNPP and 2,195 MW from NLC.
Unlike previous years where refuelling at KKNPP caused concerns, officials are confident of a stable supply from all CGS sources this summer. To further manage potential shortfalls, TNPGCL is employing short-term power procurement strategies, including tenders, power swaps with other utilities, and long-term contracts.
Tamil Nadu’s total conventional power capacity, including its CGS share and other agreements, stands at 15,839.56 MW. The state also utilizes non-conventional sources like hydro, wind, and solar power, along with power exchanges to address daily fluctuations.
