**Chennai, February 3, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation announced a series of bridge projects aimed at improving connectivity and alleviating traffic congestion across the city. The initiative includes the construction of three new steel bridges connecting East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) across the Buckingham Canal. These bridges will offer alternative routes, easing pressure on existing, narrow crossings. The new bridges will connect:
* Venkatesapuram on ECR with Elango Nagar on OMR
* Maniammai Street on ECR with Veeramani Salai on OMR
* Arignar Anna Nagar on ECR with Pandian Salai on OMR
In addition to new construction, several existing bridges are slated for demolition and reconstruction. These include:
* The Kodungaiyur Canal bridge connecting Tondiarpet High Road and Kadumbadi Amman Koil Street, which requires reconstruction to improve structural integrity.
* The Tamizhar Veedhi bridge in Anna Nagar, undergoing reconstruction as part of routine maintenance, with an expected increase in carriageway space.
* Bridges on Indira Gandhi 2nd Street and Kannagi Street in Anna Nagar, both approved for reconstruction.
These projects represent a significant investment in Chennai’s infrastructure, promising improved traffic flow and enhanced connectivity for residents.
