**CHENNAI, February 2, 2025** – Five years after jumping bail, Kamrul Alam, accused of murdering an elderly couple in Chennai, has been rearrested. Alam, a Bihar native, was apprehended in Mumbai by Greater Chennai Police’s Special Task Force.
Alam, who worked in construction, allegedly killed 76-year-old Mayandi and his wife Vallinayaki in 2018 following a wage dispute at their Thoraipakkam home. He also allegedly stole their jewelry. While initially arrested, Alam secured bail using fraudulent surety and absconded. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued by the Alandur Court.
The police investigation, aided by the cyber crime unit, tracked money deposited into Alam’s wife’s account and subsequently traced the withdrawals to an ATM in Mumbai. This led to Alam’s arrest. Police discovered he had sustained leg injuries in a recent accident. He was brought back to Chennai after obtaining a prisoner transfer warrant.
