**New Delhi, January 30, 2024** – High-stakes campaigning for the Delhi Assembly elections concluded today at 5 pm, marking the start of a mandatory 48-hour silence period before voting begins on February 5th. The final day saw a flurry of activity, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holding 22 roadshows and rallies in a bid to regain power after over two decades in opposition. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), however, remains confident of a third consecutive victory, highlighting its popular welfare schemes. The Congress, meanwhile, aims for a resurgence after failing to win any seats in the past two elections.
This election cycle has been characterized by intense campaigning, including a significant use of AI-generated content, sharp political attacks, and numerous high-profile rallies. The parties engaged in a war of words, with the AAP targeting the BJP with nicknames like “Bharatiya Jhootha Party” (Indian Liar Party) and “Gali Galouch Party” (Abusive Party). In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dubbed the AAP “AAP-Daa” (disaster) and Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP chief, “Ghoshna Mantri” (Minister of Announcements). The Congress also joined the fray, labeling Kejriwal “Farziwal” (Fake).
A record 1.56 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots across 13,766 polling stations. The Election Commission has implemented a new Queue Management System (QMS) app to help voters check real-time queue lengths at polling stations. To ensure accessibility, 733 polling stations are designated for persons with disabilities, and a home voting facility has already enabled 6,980 eligible senior citizens and persons with disabilities to vote. Robust security measures are in place, with the deployment of 220 companies of paramilitary forces, 19,000 home guards, and 35,626 Delhi Police personnel.
Past election results saw AAP sweeping 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020, leaving the BJP and Congress with minimal representation. With the BJP hoping to break AAP’s dominance and the Congress aiming for a comeback, this election is anticipated to be one of the most closely contested in Delhi’s history. The results will be announced on February 8th.
