**BEIRUT, Lebanon** – Hezbollah will hold a joint public funeral for its slain leader Hassan Nasrallah and his successor, Hashem Safieddine, on February 23rd, the group announced Sunday. The funeral, delayed by two months of intense fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, will mark the first public acknowledgement of Safieddine’s appointment as Secretary-General before his death.
Hezbollah’s current chief, Naim Qassem, revealed in a televised address that Safieddine had been chosen to succeed Nasrallah before being killed in an Israeli raid in October. Nasrallah, killed in an Israeli strike last September, will be buried on the outskirts of Beirut. Safieddine will be laid to rest in his hometown of Deir Qanun in southern Lebanon. The February 23rd ceremony is expected to be a large-scale event.
