Mon Feb 03 16:02:00 UTC 2025: ## Sivakasi Guest Lecturers Protest for Higher Salaries

**Sivakasi, February 3, 2025** – Guest lecturers in Tamil Nadu staged a protest in Sivakasi on Monday, demanding a salary increase in line with University Grants Commission (UGC) recommendations. Over 7,300 guest lecturers across the state’s government arts and science colleges currently earn a consolidated monthly salary of ₹25,000, paid only for 11 months of the year.

The protestors, led by K. Subramaniyan and B. Arumugam of the Joint Action Committee of Guest Lecturers’ Association, highlighted the UGC’s recommendation for a ₹57,500 monthly salary. Despite this recommendation and a High Court order directing the state government to implement the increase, the government has yet to act. Protesters cited significant financial hardship, with delays in salary payments causing difficulties in meeting basic needs like children’s school fees. The association also requested priority consideration for guest lecturers when filling permanent positions.
