Sun Feb 02 23:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Grizzlies Edge Rockets in Close Western Conference Battle

**MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)** — The Memphis Grizzlies narrowly defeated the Houston Rockets 120-119 Thursday night in a thrilling Western Conference clash, snapping Houston’s four-game winning streak and moving within half a game of the Rockets in the standings.

Desmond Bane led the Grizzlies with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Jaren Jackson Jr. delivered the game-winning free throws with 8.6 seconds remaining, finishing with 21 points. Luke Kennard contributed 21 points, and Santi Aldama added 15 for Memphis, who have now won six of their last seven games.

Jalen Green paced the Rockets with 25 points, supported by Dillon Brooks’ 22 points and Amen Thompson’s 21 points and seven rebounds. The Rockets’ strong start, fueled by effective three-point shooting, ultimately couldn’t withstand Memphis’ late-game surge. The game was further complicated by a controversial timeout call with 13 seconds left, which saw Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins visibly upset after a timeout was called despite his claim he did not call for one.

Both teams were hampered by key absences. Houston missed Western Conference All-Star reserve Alperen Sengun due to a left calf contusion, while Memphis was without Ja Morant, sidelined by right shoulder soreness. Despite the setbacks, the Grizzlies finally overcame their three previous losses to the Rockets this season. Houston’s 19 offensive rebounds, resulting in 30 second-chance points, highlighted their tenacity but proved insufficient for victory.

The Rockets will next face Brooklyn on Saturday, while the Grizzlies travel to Milwaukee on Sunday.
