Mon Feb 03 15:53:03 UTC 2025: ## Madurai on High Alert Amidst Communal Tensions
**Madurai, February 3, 2025** – The temple town of Tirupparankundram in Madurai is under a heavy security blanket following escalating communal tensions and a planned Hindu Munnani demonstration. A prohibitory order has been imposed for two days, and hundreds of police officers, including reinforcements from outside the city, have been deployed to prevent potential unrest.
The tensions stem from a long-standing dispute between Hindu and Muslim groups over the use of a hillock above the Subramaniya Swamy temple, which also houses a dargah. Recent allegations of non-vegetarian food consumption and a planned animal sacrifice at the dargah during the Kanthoori festival have exacerbated the situation. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments’ objections to the sacrifice further fueled the conflict.
Visits by prominent political leaders from both communities to the respective religious sites intensified the situation, leading to the Hindu Munnani’s call for a protest, which was denied permission by the Madurai City Police. The police have established multiple checkpoints to restrict movement towards the hillock and are closely monitoring the situation. While the authorities emphasize that devotees are still allowed access to both the Kasiviswanthar temple and the Sikkander dargah after security checks, the heightened security measures underscore the seriousness of the situation. The police commissioner stated that all measures are in place to prevent troublemakers, not restrict religious observance. The dispute, which also involves a long-standing disagreement over lighting a lamp near a pillar shared by both religious sites, continues to be a major concern for the authorities.
