**Chennai, February 3, 2025** – A humble gurukula building tucked away in Chintadripet’s winding alleyways stands as a silent testament to a rich history of philosophical pursuit and community spirit. Once a bustling center for learning, community gatherings, and even weddings, the building now serves as a poignant reminder of Swami Charles Chaitanya, its resident guru from 1979 until his passing in 2021.

The gurukula, believed to have been established in the 1920s, initially served as a night school for underprivileged students. Its land was donated to the Narayana Gurukula, an institution honoring the philosopher and social reformer Narayana Guru. Over the decades, the structure evolved from a palm-leaf thatched building to a tin-roofed shed, finally undergoing a major renovation in 2017 – a project completed only in 2022 due to funding constraints, tragically after Swami Charles Chaitanya’s death.

Now maintained by his disciples, the gurukula holds a special place in the hearts of the Chintadripet community, who recall numerous events and celebrations held on its premises. While the exact founding date remains debated, accounts suggest its origins lie in the efforts of P. Natarajan (Nataraja Guru), a disciple of Narayana Guru, who secured land and funds to provide education to underprivileged children.

Despite its weathered appearance, described as “dilapidated” in a biography of Swami Charles Chaitanya, the gurukula continues to serve as a focal point for prayer and remembrance, embodying the enduring legacy of its founder and the spirit of community it fostered for nearly a century. The new building now houses the urn containing his ashes, a constant presence for his followers who regularly visit to perform prayers, yoga, and maintenance work.
