Fri Jan 31 20:22:23 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Election Promises Spark Debate Over Religious Support
**NEW DELHI, February 1, 2025** – The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections are fueling a heated debate over the role of religion in politics, sparked by a recent promise from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s pledge of an ₹18,000 monthly honorarium for temple priests and gurdwara granthis has divided opinion, particularly amongst religious workers in the capital.
While some, like temple worker Satish Sharma, eagerly await the potential financial benefit, others see the BJP’s focus on the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya as a more significant source of economic prosperity, citing the burgeoning business opportunities surrounding the temple. A BJP campaign song, “Jo Ram ko lekar aaye, unka raj hoga Dilli mein,” (those who brought Lord Ram, will rule Delhi), highlights this approach.
The contrasting viewpoints were evident in conversations with religious leaders across Delhi. While some priests welcomed AAP’s offer as a much-needed financial boost, others emphasized their devotion to the Ram Mandir and the economic activity it generates. A gurdwara granthi, for example, noted that the additional ₹18,000 would significantly improve their current ₹10,000 monthly salary.
However, the AAP’s proposal has drawn criticism from the Congress party for its exclusion of Buddhist, Muslim, and Christian religious leaders. Congress leader Udit Raj has organized protests, accusing AAP of an “exclusionary” approach and anti-Dalit sentiment. This criticism was echoed by a Buddhist priest, Bhikshu B.P. Thirojyoti, who questioned why AAP hadn’t reached out to priests from marginalized communities. The Congress has promised a more inclusive financial assistance program. The differing approaches highlight the complex interplay of religious sentiment and political strategy in the lead-up to the crucial Delhi elections.
