**MUMBAI, February 1, 2025** – The number of fatalities linked to suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Maharashtra has risen to four, with a total of 140 confirmed cases reported as of Friday. The Public Health department reported that 98 cases have been officially confirmed as GBS, with 18 patients currently on ventilator support. While the department clarified that newly reported cases include those from previous days, the number of affected districts has increased from nine to eleven.

The majority of cases are concentrated in the Pune area, with 26 cases in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 78 in newly added villages within the PMC area, 15 in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and 10 in Pune Rural. The 0-9 and 20-29 age groups are the most affected, with 22 and 32 patients respectively.

A State-level rapid response team has been deployed to conduct surveillance activities, increasing the number of houses surveyed to 63,470 across PMC, PCMC, and Pune Rural areas. Water samples from various locations have been sent for analysis, with 160 samples submitted by Friday. However, the number of contaminated water sources remains at eight. Investigations continue to determine the cause of the outbreak.
