**NEW DELHI** – The Supreme Court of India bid a heartfelt farewell to Justice Hrishikesh Roy on Friday, celebrating his unique and multifaceted career. Justice Roy, who served on the Supreme Court since September 2019, is known not only for his legal acumen but also for his diverse passions, including theatre, film production, music, and quizzing.

Before donning his judicial robes, Justice Roy worked as a legal correspondent for the Press Trust of India (PTI) in Assam. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna lauded Justice Roy’s wit and unique personality, describing him as a rare individual whose talents extended far beyond the legal profession. The CJI joked that Justice Roy could have equally excelled as an actor, quizmaster, or stand-up comedian.

The farewell function, attended by judges from various high courts and young lawyers, highlighted Justice Roy’s compassionate judicial approach and his respectful treatment of all court participants, regardless of their position. CJI Khanna praised Justice Roy’s ability to make every moment count, his insightful contributions to deliberations, and his genuine concern for the people affected by the cases before the court.

Justice Roy’s diverse interests were also celebrated. He is a theatre enthusiast, a film producer (notably of “Apne Ajnabi”), and the former president of the Guwahati Music Society. The CJI even mentioned Justice Roy’s perfectly timed one-liners, recalling a witty remark made during a Supreme Court screening of the film “Laapataa Ladies.”

In his own farewell address, Justice Roy reflected on his nearly two-decade-long judicial journey, emphasizing the gradual and steady pursuit of justice. He highlighted his involvement in significant constitutional bench verdicts, including those on passive euthanasia and the selection process for election commissioners. He also authored the verdict upholding the legality of the bull-taming sport Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. Justice Roy concluded by expressing gratitude and humility for his time on the bench.
