Fri Jan 31 23:24:53 IST 2025: ## Indonesian Protesters Target Malaysian Embassy After Migrant Worker Killing

**JAKARTA, Indonesia (January 31, 2025)** – Dozens of Indonesian protesters threw eggs at the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, January 30th, to denounce the fatal shooting of an Indonesian migrant worker by Malaysian authorities.

The 50-year-old worker was killed and four others injured on January 24th when the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) opened fire on their boat, allegedly for trespassing in waters off Tanjung Rhu Beach. Video footage of the aftermath, showing wounded migrants near the body of their colleague, went viral, fueling outrage in Indonesia.

The protest, involving members of various rights groups and labor unions, saw demonstrators shouting slogans demanding justice for the deceased and an investigation into the use of excessive force by the APMM. The Malaysian embassy was visibly damaged by the egg-throwing.

Indonesian authorities received the victim’s body on Wednesday and the Foreign Affairs Ministry has demanded a thorough investigation. Migrant Care, an advocacy group, reported at least 75 similar killings of Indonesian migrant workers by Malaysian authorities since 2005, highlighting the incident as part of a larger pattern.

Despite Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s recent pledge to collaborate with Malaysia on migrant worker issues during a state visit, the shooting has ignited a national outcry. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between the two countries regarding the treatment of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia.
