**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, February 1, 2025** – Following a deadly stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela that claimed at least 30 lives, the Uttar Pradesh government has taken swift action to bolster security and crowd management for the remainder of the religious festival. Two senior IAS officers, Ashish Goyal and Bhanu Chandra Goswami, both with extensive experience managing the 2019 Ardh Kumbh, have been deployed to Prayagraj to work alongside Mela Adhikari Vijay Kiran Anand.
The move comes ahead of Basant Panchami (Amrit Snan) on February 3rd, a key bathing day expected to draw massive crowds. Mr. Goyal, a 1995-batch IAS officer with a distinguished career in Prayagraj, and Mr. Goswami, a 2009-batch officer with experience as District Magistrate, will leverage their expertise in crowd control and inter-agency coordination to prevent further incidents.
In addition to the IAS officers, the UP government has also deployed four senior police superintendents and three additional superintendents to strengthen security. These officers will focus on improving crowd flow, enhancing emergency response mechanisms, and strengthening inter-agency coordination. Increased police patrolling and stricter access controls are also planned.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, began on January 13th and is expected to attract up to 45 crore pilgrims by its conclusion on February 26th. The recent stampede, which occurred during Mauni Amavasya, highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures. Authorities are committed to ensuring the remaining days of the festival proceed without further tragedy.
