Fri Jan 31 19:15:46 UTC 2025: ## Most Indian Nationals in Goma, Congo, Relocate Amidst M23 Rebel Advance

**New Delhi, February 1, 2025** – The majority of Indian nationals residing in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have relocated to safer areas following the M23 rebel group’s seizure of the city, according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The rebels, supported by Rwandan soldiers, have taken control of key locations in Goma, including the airport, prompting the Congolese armed forces to surrender.

While the situation in Goma is now relatively calm, with firing having ceased, the MEA expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation. The Indian embassy in Kinshasa has issued advisories to the approximately 1,000 Indian nationals in Goma, ensuring regular contact for their welfare.

Over 1,200 Indian troops deployed with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) are reported safe and continuing their mandated duties at their deployment locations in Goma and Sake. The MEA confirmed it is in regular contact with the UN regarding the situation.

The M23 rebel advance has caused widespread displacement, with hundreds of thousands fleeing the intense fighting. The UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO, established in 2010, currently has over 13,000 personnel, with Bangladesh contributing the largest number of troops. Mr. Jaiswal called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
