**LAHORE, PAKISTAN** – Despite ongoing renovations at several venues, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has emphatically declared the country fully prepared to host the upcoming Champions Trophy, beginning February 19th. Concerns had been raised regarding the readiness of the three host stadiums – Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), National Stadium (Karachi), and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium – with some construction still underway.
Naqvi addressed these concerns directly, stating that while some work will continue after the tournament’s commencement, all essential facilities for teams, officials, media, and spectators will be completed by February 11th, the inauguration date for the National Stadium in Karachi. He confirmed that the Gaddafi Stadium will be ready for its February 7th inauguration by the Prime Minister.
The PCB chief revealed that the renovation budget exceeded the initial 12 billion Pakistani rupees, but insisted that the costs will be recovered through a unique arrangement with the ICC, where the board will receive financial compensation instead of complimentary tickets and passes. He stressed that all funding came solely from the PCB’s resources, without government assistance.
Despite facing criticism regarding the ongoing construction and the quality of newly installed chairs at Gaddafi Stadium (which Naqvi defended as cost-effective and durable), the PCB remains steadfast in its commitment to hosting a successful tournament. Top officials from various cricket boards, including India, have been invited to attend various events throughout the tournament. While the ICC captains’ conference and photoshoots will be omitted due to tight team travel schedules, the tournament’s opening ceremony is scheduled for February 16th in Lahore. Naqvi expressed confidence that the event will showcase Pakistan’s hosting capabilities.
