Sat Feb 01 08:16:07 IST 2025: ## Trinamool Congress Blasts UP Government Over Maha Kumbh Stampede Deaths

**Kolkata, February 1, 2025** – The death toll of West Bengal pilgrims in the Maha Kumbh Mela stampede has risen to four, prompting sharp criticism from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee accused the Uttar Pradesh government of prioritizing publicity over adequate planning and arrangements for the event.

Banerjee stated that the stampede, which he called “extremely unfortunate,” highlighted a lack of proper planning and shoddy arrangements, contrasting this with the extensive publicity surrounding the Kumbh Mela. He further criticized the VIP treatment afforded to leaders and ministers, noting that vehicles were allowed near the Sangam, a practice he deemed unacceptable.

The TMC leader drew parallels with the Gangasagar Mela in West Bengal, highlighting its successful and incident-free organization under the Mamata Banerjee administration. The party emphasized the need for maximal planning and care for pilgrims in large gatherings.

The four deceased West Bengal pilgrims have been identified as Basanti Poddar, Urmila Bhuniya, Amiya Saha, and Binod Ruidas. West Bengal ministers have met with the families of the deceased to offer assistance. Returning pilgrims have reported receiving little help from the Uttar Pradesh government following the tragedy. Banerjee also suggested that if the incident had occurred in a non-BJP state, the BJP would have called for Presidential rule.
