**MUMBAI, INDIA** – Shahid Kapoor’s highly anticipated action-thriller, “Deva,” debuted in theaters on Friday to a less-than-stellar opening day collection of only ₹5 crore (approximately $600,000 USD). While the film’s trailer and Kapoor’s “rowdy” look generated considerable buzz, the initial box office numbers suggest a lukewarm reception from audiences.
The film, directed by Rohan Andrews, saw its strongest showing in evening screenings, with morning viewership remaining notably low. Chennai led in ticket sales, followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai. The Delhi NCR region contributed only 9% to the film’s opening day earnings. This underperformance is partly attributed to a clash with an India-England cricket match.
Kapoor, who described his role as the most challenging of his career, plays a rebellious police officer investigating a high-profile case that uncovers corruption within his own department. The film also stars Pooja Hegde and Pavel Gulati. Despite its action-packed nature, “Deva,” reportedly made on a budget of ₹50 crore (approximately $6 million USD), failed to generate significant opening day excitement. This follows a string of less successful films for Kapoor, including “Jersey,” “Bloody Daddy,” and “Teri Baaton Mein.”
Whether “Deva” can recover in subsequent days remains to be seen. Kapoor’s next project, “Arjun Ustra,” is already underway.
