**New Delhi, February 1, 2025** – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her record-breaking eighth Union Budget today, highlighting a significant expansion of affordable housing initiatives. The budget includes provisions to complete 40,000 housing units in 2025-26 under the Special Window for Affordable and Mid-income housing scheme (SWAMIH), providing relief to families burdened by both mortgages and rental payments due to construction delays.
Building on the success of the original SWAMIH scheme, which has already delivered keys to buyers of 50,000 units in stalled projects, the government announced the creation of a ₹15,000 crore SWAMIH 2 fund. This blended finance initiative, involving government contributions, banks, and private investors, aims to expedite the completion of another 100,000 housing units. Sitharaman’s presentation marks her eighth consecutive budget, drawing her closer to the record held by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
