Fri Jan 31 22:22:00 UTC 2025: ## Prayagraj Kumbh Mela Stampede Leaves Dozens Dead, Hundreds Injured

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, February 1, 2025** – A deadly stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on January 29, resulted in at least 30 deaths and over 60 injuries, according to official estimates. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning near the Sangam ghat, the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, during the auspicious Mauni Amavasya ritual bath.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as a surging crowd overwhelmed barricades, causing them to collapse and leading to a mass of people trampling each other. The delayed release of casualty figures – more than 15 hours after the event – drew criticism. Many pilgrims allege that VIPs were given preferential treatment, bypassing long lines and congested areas. Reports indicate that pilgrims had to walk several kilometers to reach the bathing area due to restrictions on public transport within the Kumbh Mela grounds.

The stampede separated families and friends, leaving many desperately searching for missing loved ones. Heartbreaking accounts emerged from individuals like Raj Kumar Rauniyar from Nepal, who lost his mother in the chaos and is still searching for her, and Sangeeta from Bihar, who lost her mother. The aftermath saw overwhelmed lost-and-found centers, hospitals filled with injured, and morgues with unclaimed bodies.

Criticism has been leveled at the event’s organization and crowd management. Retired IPS officer Vibhuti Narain Rai highlighted the violation of established crowd control regulations, citing excessive VIP movement and the concentration of pilgrims at a single, overcrowded ghat. Pilgrims complained about inadequate signage directing people to alternative ghats, exacerbating the overcrowding at the Sangam ghat. Allegations of mismanagement and preferential treatment for VIPs have also sparked outrage. Videos showing clashes between pilgrims and VIP vehicles have gone viral on social media.

Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh government has pledged improved crowd control measures for the remaining Amrit Snans. Additional police officers and first-aid posts have been deployed, and incoming pilgrims are now being controlled to prevent overcrowding. However, these measures have led to further delays and inconvenience for many pilgrims.

The incident has prompted a review of safety protocols and raised serious questions about crowd management at large-scale religious gatherings. The event’s commercialization and the resulting large influx of pilgrims have also come under scrutiny as contributing factors to the tragedy.
