**Washington, D.C. –** A new poll reveals significant public opposition to Republican plans to slash funding for Medicaid and other federal health programs, despite the programs’ widespread popularity. The findings come as the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Congress aim to offset the cost of proposed tax cuts and immigration policies through deep government spending reductions.
The House Budget Committee has outlined potential cuts totaling trillions of dollars, with up to $2.3 trillion earmarked from Medicaid and another $1 trillion from Medicare and other health programs. These plans have ignited concerns, amplified by a recent, albeit temporary, disruption to the Medicaid payment system.
Adding fuel to the fire, President Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., criticized government-run health programs during his confirmation hearing, claiming public dislike for Medicaid and a preference for private insurance. This assertion directly contradicts the poll’s findings.
While economic issues and immigration dominated the 2024 election, the poll, conducted by PerryUndem/YouGov from December 13-23, 2024 among 1,269 adults, indicates widespread dissatisfaction with the current healthcare system. A significant majority (78%) finds healthcare unaffordable, and many have experienced medical debt or forgone care due to cost.
Despite this dissatisfaction, the poll shows strong support for government-sponsored health programs. Eighty percent of respondents view Medicaid favorably, with approval even higher among current and former enrollees. A majority (89%) favor maintaining or increasing Medicaid funding, while only 12% support cuts.
The poll also reveals opposition to specific Republican proposals, including per-capita caps on federal Medicaid payments (opposed by 53%), reductions in funding for states that expanded Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act (opposed by 55%), and removing coverage protections for vulnerable populations (also widely opposed). While a work requirement for Medicaid benefits found some support (38%), it was still significantly opposed by a considerable portion of the population.
Conversely, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a frequent target of Republican efforts, enjoys broad public support (73% favorable). The poll even suggests that detailing specific ACA provisions reduced Republican support for its repeal.
The survey also indicates significant support for a public health insurance option (55%), an idea that even garners considerable support among Republicans (45%). Many Republicans, however, remain undecided on various proposed healthcare cuts, suggesting a potential “wait-and-see” approach.
The poll’s findings highlight a potential political challenge for Republicans. While voters express discontent with the healthcare system, they appear unwilling to support cuts to popular programs like Medicaid that would likely exacerbate existing affordability problems. The upcoming debate on government spending will be closely watched, as public opinion could significantly impact the trajectory of healthcare policy.
