Fri Jan 31 06:01:28 UTC 2025: ## Washington DC Midair Collision Kills All 67 Aboard: Worst US Air Disaster in 25 Years
**Washington, D.C.** – A catastrophic midair collision over the Potomac River Wednesday night resulted in the deaths of all 67 people aboard an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. The crash, the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster in nearly a quarter-century, occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport just before 9 p.m. in clear weather conditions.
The American Airlines Flight 5342, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was on final approach to the airport when it collided with the helicopter, which had three soldiers onboard. Both aircraft plunged into the icy river, instantly submerged. Recovery efforts, hampered by freezing temperatures and strong currents, have recovered over 40 bodies as of Friday. Authorities have confirmed there are no survivors.
Among the victims were teenage figure skaters returning from a national competition in Wichita, Kansas, along with their mothers and coaches. Other victims included an Ohio college student, two Chinese nationals, and a group of hunters.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has retrieved the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the American Airlines plane. These “black boxes” will be crucial in determining the cause of the crash, with a preliminary report expected within 30 days. A full investigation, however, could take months.
Initial reports suggest the Black Hawk helicopter may have been operating outside its designated flight path and at a higher-than-permitted altitude. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) report also revealed that the air traffic control tower at Reagan National Airport was understaffed at the time of the collision, with one controller handling the responsibilities typically divided between two. While some dispute this, asserting normal staffing levels, the FAA report stated the situation was “not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic.”
President Donald Trump expressed grief over the tragedy, calling it “a dark and excruciating night” and questioning why the helicopter didn’t take evasive action. He also criticized air traffic control. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated the crash was “absolutely preventable.”
The USACE Baltimore district has activated its emergency operations center to assist in the cleanup of wreckage from the Potomac River. The close-knit figure skating community is mourning the loss of several athletes, coaches, and families. The Chinese embassy confirmed the presence of two Chinese citizens among the victims.
The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of air traffic control procedures and aviation safety protocols around the heavily trafficked airspace near Washington, D.C. The investigation is ongoing.
