Fri Jan 31 14:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Khawaja Makes History with Double Century in Sri Lanka

**Galle, Sri Lanka –** Australian opener Usman Khawaja etched his name into cricketing history today, becoming the first Australian to score a double century in a Test match played in Sri Lanka. The 38-year-old achieved the milestone during the second day’s play of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Khawaja reached the landmark score of 200 runs with a single, off 290 balls, in the 111th over of Australia’s innings. His innings, studded with 16 fours and a six, surpassed the previous highest Australian Test score in Sri Lanka – Justin Langer’s 166 runs in 2004.

This remarkable achievement also places Khawaja in esteemed company. He is only seven runs away from breaking Dinesh Chandimal’s record for the highest score in a Test match between Australia and Sri Lanka played in Sri Lanka (206 runs). The current record for the most runs by an opposition batter in a Test in Sri Lanka is held by Chris Gayle (333 runs).

Khawaja’s innings has been a cornerstone of Australia’s strong first innings performance. He formed crucial partnerships with Travis Head (57 runs) and Steve Smith (141 runs), who also scored a century. With the score significantly advanced, Khawaja continues to build on his remarkable feat, now batting with debutant Josh Inglis. This double century represents a stunning turnaround for Khawaja after a poor showing in the recent series against India.
