Thu Jan 30 18:46:29 UTC 2025: ## Manipur Government to Propose Solution on Controversial District Creation
**Imphal, Manipur –** A crucial meeting was held Thursday to address the ongoing dispute over the creation of seven new districts in Manipur. Representatives from the central government, the Manipur state government, and the United Naga Council (UNC) participated in the tripartite talks in Senapati district. The UNC, representing Naga tribes, continues to demand a rollback of the districts, created in 2016 under controversial circumstances by the then Congress government, claiming they encroach on ancestral Naga lands.
While the previous round of talks in November yielded no results, Thursday’s meeting concluded with an agreement that the Manipur government will present a proposal during the next tripartite meeting scheduled for April. The proposal aims to resolve the conflict stemming from the creation of the districts under the leadership of former Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh. The meeting was attended by key officials including AK Mishra, MHA adviser for northeast affairs, and UNC leaders NG Lorho and Vareiyo Shatsang.
The dispute comes amidst ongoing ethnic violence between Kuki tribes and the Meitei community, adding complexity to the situation. The creation of the seven districts and the earlier inclusion of the Any Kuki Tribes into the Scheduled Tribes category under Mr. Singh’s government are factors that have contributed to the current tensions. The April meeting will be crucial in determining the future of the controversial districts and potentially easing tensions in the volatile region.
