Fri Jan 31 20:08:30 IST 2025: ## Thoothukudi Corporation Approves ₹1.39 Crore in Backlogged Provident Fund Payments

**THOOTHUKUDI, January 31, 2025** – The Thoothukudi Corporation Council concluded a meeting Friday, approving the release of ₹1.39 crore in provident fund interest payments to 555 retired municipal workers. This long-overdue payment covers deductions withheld from salaries between 1984 and 1985.

The meeting, presided over by Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, saw the unanimous approval of 18 resolutions, including the crucial provident fund disbursement. Council members also highlighted several pressing civic concerns. These included persistent water stagnation near S.V. Government Higher Secondary School and court premises, malfunctioning lifts at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital, and leaking drinking water pipelines causing water wastage and sanitation issues. They urged for improved implementation of the underground drainage system and the construction of stormwater drainage facilities in ward 5, along with road infrastructure improvements in Muthaiyapuram.

Mayor Periyasamy addressed the council, announcing the completion of 2,500 new roads within municipal limits and ongoing efforts to improve parks with fencing and children’s play equipment. He highlighted the success of a women’s park on the Thoothukudi-Tirunelveli road and announced plans for a similar facility in the city’s north zone. He assured the council that repairs to leaking water pipelines and streetlights would be expedited. Corporation Commissioner L. Madhubalan and Deputy Mayor S. Jenitta were also in attendance.
