**New Delhi:** Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal was detained by Delhi Police on Thursday after staging a protest outside the residence of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Maliwal, along with hundreds of supporters, dumped three mini-truckloads of garbage collected from the Vikaspuri area, citing severe sanitation issues plaguing the region.
The protest, which included women carrying placards reading “Muskuraiye, AAP Delhi Mein Hain” (Smile, AAP is in Delhi), saw Maliwal personally shoveling the refuse onto the street outside Kejriwal’s 5, Ferozeshah Road residence. Police subsequently intervened, detaining Maliwal and taking her to the Parliament Street Police Station.
Maliwal was later released after an FIR was registered against her under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code for violating prohibitory orders. She accused Kejriwal of neglecting Delhi’s sanitation for the past ten years, leading to overflowing drains, broken roads, and mountains of garbage affecting the health and hygiene of residents. She claimed that the conditions forced women and children to live in unhygienic conditions.
Prior to the protest, Maliwal posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showcasing the garbage collection in Vikaspuri and announcing her intention to dump it at Kejriwal’s residence. The protest comes amidst an ongoing strained relationship between Maliwal and Kejriwal, stemming from an alleged incident of misconduct by Kejriwal’s personal secretary, a matter currently before the courts.
