**Chennai, January 31, 2025** – The Chennai Corporation Council approved a significant investment in flood mitigation projects, allocating over ₹34 crore for the restoration of several key canals across the city. The initiative aims to improve drainage and reduce flooding in vulnerable areas.
Key projects include the restoration of the Mambalam Canal (₹6.5 crore), Nandanam Canal (₹7.5 crore), and MGR Canal (₹6.56 crore). Further work will involve rebuilding the retaining wall of the Jafferkhanpet Canal (₹5.29 crore) and demolishing and replacing an old drain in ward 155 (₹7.94 crore). The Reddikuppam Canal in Adyar will also undergo restoration following resident complaints.
The council also approved raising the retaining wall of Veerangal Odai and installing chain link fencing. Additionally, the construction of animal birth control centers and 36 projects under the CMDA’s Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam were greenlit. These latter projects encompass improvements such as the expansion of Madhavaram bus terminus, construction of a new bus stand, and development of an eco-park. Work on the canal restorations is expected to begin immediately.
