Thu Jan 30 17:24:32 UTC 2025: ## Qatar’s Emir Makes Historic Visit to Syria, Signaling Shift in Relations

**Doha, January 30, 2025** – In a landmark move signaling a significant shift in relations, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani arrived in Damascus today for an official visit, becoming the first head of state to visit Syria since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad. He was welcomed by Syria’s interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

The visit, less than two months after Islamist-led rebels removed Assad from power, follows a recent visit by Qatar’s Prime Minister and the reopening of Qatar’s embassy in Damascus. Qatar, unlike many Arab nations, had not restored ties with Assad’s regime and was a key supporter of the rebellion.

The Qatari foreign ministry has expressed support for Syria’s efforts to restructure its state and establish peace and stability under the interim government. This visit underscores Qatar’s commitment to this process, with discussions expected to focus on cooperation and aid in various sectors. Qatar has already pledged significant support, including providing 200 megawatts of power and potentially assisting with public sector salaries. This follows earlier pledges of infrastructure rehabilitation.

The Emir’s visit is part of a series of high-level diplomatic engagements in Damascus since Assad’s removal. Delegations from Russia, Turkey, France, Germany, and other nations have also visited Syria recently. This flurry of diplomatic activity indicates a growing international engagement with Syria’s transitional government.
