**COPENHAGEN, January 30, 2025** – An overwhelming majority of Greenlanders oppose joining the United States, according to a new opinion poll. The survey, conducted by Verian for Danish daily Berlingske and Greenlandic daily Sermitsiaq, revealed that 85% of Greenlanders wish to maintain their semi-autonomous status within Denmark. Only 6% favored becoming part of the U.S., with 9% undecided.
This strong rejection comes after U.S. President Donald Trump’s earlier suggestion that Greenland was vital to U.S. security and that Denmark should relinquish control of the strategically important island.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed Denmark’s commitment to respecting international borders, following discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. She welcomed the poll results as an indication of continued close cooperation between Greenland and Denmark, albeit potentially in a revised form.
Denmark’s commitment to Greenland is further underscored by its recent announcement of a 14.6 billion crown ($2.04 billion) investment to bolster its Arctic military presence. Greenland, with a population of 57,000 and a landmass exceeding that of Mexico, gained broad self-governing autonomy in 2009, including the right to declare independence via referendum. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has consistently reiterated the island’s non-negotiable status and the right of its people to self-determination.
The U.S. maintains a permanent military presence at the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, a crucial location for its ballistic missile early-warning system due to the island’s strategic geographic position.
