Fri Jan 31 07:26:27 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan Cracks Down on Human Smuggling After Deadly Boat Disasters
**Islamabad, Pakistan** – Following a series of deadly boat disasters off the coasts of Greece and Morocco, in which dozens of Pakistani citizens perished, the Pakistani government has launched a wide-ranging crackdown on human smuggling networks. At least 43 Pakistanis died in the January incident off Morocco, and nearly 40 died in separate incidents off the Greek coast in December 2023.
The government’s response includes the dismissal of nearly 50 officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), including its chief, Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir. Over 50 more FIA officials have been blacklisted from immigration checkpoints and anti-human trafficking units. Several arrests of individuals facilitating smuggling have also been made.
A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally overseeing the intensified efforts to combat human smuggling, citing concerns over reputational damage and the suffering of families affected by these tragedies. The government claims improvements in border screening and stronger enforcement are making smuggling more difficult.
Despite the crackdown, the recent deaths off the coast of Morocco highlight the ongoing challenge. The trend of Pakistani migration to Europe, which began decades ago, has evolved, with smugglers utilizing increasingly complex routes, including those passing through Dubai, Ethiopia, and Senegal before reaching the Mediterranean.
The government acknowledges that while economic hardship contributes to migration, social pressures and family influence are also significant factors, with peer pressure and the desire to emulate relatives already living in Europe playing a major role. Even those from relatively affluent families are participating.
While official figures show a significant decrease in the number of Pakistanis leaving the country for Europe in 2024, the FIA acknowledges that smugglers are adapting, leading to ongoing efforts to enhance surveillance and detection mechanisms at key exit points. The government is also working on repatriating thousands of Pakistanis stranded in Libya.
Despite the government’s efforts, the FIA stresses the importance of public awareness campaigns to dissuade people from risking their lives and investing vast sums of money in dangerous journeys. The ultimate success of the crackdown remains to be seen.
