**Bhubaneswar, January 31, 2025** – The Odisha government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has unveiled a plan to fill 65,000 public sector vacancies over the next two years. This initiative aims to fulfill a key Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) election pledge to fill 1.5 lakh vacancies within five years.
The General Administration and Public Grievance (GAPG) department has instructed all departments to update their vacancy lists. According to the recruitment web portal, as of January 27, 2025, there were 94,819 base-level vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 387,537. Of these, 40,234 posts have received approval for recruitment, and 33,420 have been sent to recruiting agencies.
The Health and Family Welfare department has the highest number of vacancies, with 22,711 unfilled positions. The School and Mass Education department follows closely with 21,154 vacancies. Significant vacancies also exist in the Home (9,880), Revenue and Disaster Management (5,301), and Higher Education (4,733) departments.
The BJP’s election campaign heavily criticized the previous Naveen Patnaik government for failing to fill these vacancies, citing financial prudence as the excuse. The party highlighted the resulting unemployment as a major issue during the 2024 elections, which saw the BJP win a historic mandate ending 24 years of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) rule.
In separate news, Chief Minister Majhi announced that Odisha received 593 investment proposals during the Utkarsh Odisha (Make-in-Odisha) conclave, totaling over ₹16.73 lakh crore and potentially creating 12.88 lakh jobs.
