**KOCHI, Kerala –** Fifty suspected irregular migrants were apprehended in a late-night raid conducted by the Ernakulam Rural police in Kerala, India on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Twenty-seven of the detainees have reportedly confessed to being Bangladeshi citizens.

The raid, involving a 60-member police team and the Anti-Terrorism Squad, targeted a house in the North Paravur police station limits. Three Bangladeshi passports were recovered from the suspects, most of whom possessed Aadhaar cards and claimed to have obtained Indian documents through agents. Police Chief Vaibhav Saxena stated that the migrants had been working in Kerala for varying lengths of time and that investigations are underway to determine if they had also been in other states.

The detainees will be charged under the Passport Act and the Registration of Foreigners Act, facing potential imprisonment of two to eight years. They will appear in court for remand, with police seeking custody for further questioning.

This latest operation brings the total number of suspected irregular migrants detained in Ernakulam Rural this month to 57, with 34 identified as Bangladeshi. This follows six similar arrests made by Kochi City police. The crackdown is in response to a recent directive from the Chief Minister and State Police Chief, citing internal security concerns. The Ernakulam Rural area has a significant migrant workforce.
