Fri Jan 31 13:35:45 IST 2025: ## Kerala Child Rights Commission Investigates Teen’s Alleged Suicide Due to School Ragging
**Kochi, January 31, 2025** – The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has launched a suo motu investigation into the death of a 14-year-old boy who allegedly committed suicide on January 15th. His family claims the suicide was a result of severe ragging at his school.
The investigation follows a petition from the boy’s mother to the Chief Minister and State Police Chief, alleging that her son was subjected to brutal ragging at his school, both on campus and on the school bus. She provided evidence gathered from her son’s friends and social media messages, including content from a since-deleted Instagram group chat detailing the alleged incidents.
Kochi City police had already initiated an inquiry following the mother’s petition, which was forwarded to the District Police Chief. The Hill Palace police initially registered a case of unnatural death. Now, the Child Rights Commission has registered a suo motu case and will be issuing notices to the District Police Chief and the relevant Station House Officer for reports.
The Ernakulam District Child Welfare Council is also involved, having spoken to the mother, police officials, and school authorities. While the school denies any ragging incidents, the mother’s petition alleges that the school attempted to cover up the events to protect its reputation. Further investigation is underway. The deceased, a Class 9 student who enrolled in November 2024, was the eldest son of the petitioner.
