Fri Jan 31 11:40:00 IST 2025: ## Hawaii Hit by Kona Storm: Heavy Snow, High Winds, and Flash Flood Warnings
HONOLULU, HI – Hawaii is facing a powerful Kona storm bringing a mix of severe weather conditions across the islands. While known for its tropical climate, the Big Island is experiencing heavy snowfall, with the National Weather Service issuing a winter storm warning for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, predicting 12 to 24 inches of accumulation. High wind warnings are also in effect, with gusts exceeding 90 mph expected until Saturday.
The storm, which began Thursday, is also causing heavy rain and damaging winds across the archipelago. Kauai has already reported downed trees and power lines, with Lihue Airport recording a wind gust of 58 mph. Flash flooding is a significant concern due to the heavy rainfall, and widespread power outages are possible due to the strong winds. Severe thunderstorm watches have been issued for parts of the state.
Travel to the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea is strongly discouraged due to hazardous conditions, including blowing snow and near-zero visibility. While snowfall on the highest peaks is not unheard of, occurring a few times a year, this storm is bringing significant accumulation. Past storms have even resulted in blizzard warnings for these areas.
The storm system is expected to move eastward through the islands as a cold front passes. The National Weather Service is urging residents to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates. This event highlights that even Hawaii is susceptible to severe winter weather at higher elevations.
