**Jackson, MS** – The IRS is issuing automatic stimulus payments of up to $1,400 to over one million taxpayers who were eligible but did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns. The agency began distributing the $2.4 billion in payments in December, with the majority expected to arrive by the end of January.
These payments address a situation where eligible individuals missed claiming the credit, intended to compensate for missed Economic Impact Payments (stimulus checks) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The IRS proactively identified these individuals and is sending payments automatically, eliminating the need for amended tax returns.
Payments will be sent via direct deposit or paper check, with a notification letter preceding the payment. Taxpayers who haven’t yet filed their 2021 return still have until April 15, 2025, to do so and may still be eligible for the payment. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated that these automatic payments demonstrate the agency’s commitment to ensuring taxpayers receive all benefits they are owed.
