**New Delhi, January 31, 2025** – India’s urban infrastructure has witnessed significant improvements, according to the Economic Survey 2025, tabled in Parliament today. The survey highlights substantial progress in sanitation and water supply, with tap water coverage reaching 70% and sewerage coverage rising to 62% in Indian cities.
Key achievements cited include the success of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. Launched in 2015, AMRUT has augmented water treatment capacity by 4,649 million litres per day and developed over 5,070 acres of green space through the creation of 2,439 parks. AMRUT 2.0, launched in 2021, aims to expand coverage further, with ₹1.89 lakh crore already allocated for 8,923 projects.
The survey also notes the impact of the Google toilet locator, which has mapped 67,407 public and community toilets across 3,326 cities. Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) has sanctioned 1.18 crore houses, with 89 lakh completed by November 2024. The Smart Cities Mission has also completed 7,479 projects worth ₹1.50 lakh crore, including significant affordable housing units, road improvements, and LED streetlight installations.
Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar lauded the survey’s findings, emphasizing the transformative impact of initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the expansion of metro rail networks. He highlighted the government’s commitment to continued investment in smart urban planning, improved public transport, and sustainable development to build a future-ready infrastructure ecosystem.
