AMARAVATI, Andhra Pradesh – Andhra Pradesh has launched “WhatsApp Governance,” a pioneering initiative in India that aims to revolutionize citizen access to public services. The program, unveiled by IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh, initially offers 161 services across various departments, including Endowments, Energy, APSRTC, Revenue, Anna Canteens, CM Relief Fund, and Municipal Administration. This will significantly reduce the need for citizens to physically visit government offices.
The initiative, born from Minister Lokesh’s observations during his “padayatra” (walkathon), addresses common citizen complaints about bureaucratic red tape. The system leverages the widespread use of WhatsApp, allowing citizens to access services directly through the app. Future phases will expand service offerings to 520.
A key feature of the new system is the inclusion of QR codes on issued certificates, enhancing security and combating the creation of fraudulent documents. The Andhra Pradesh government, in partnership with Meta, has prioritized data security and implemented robust cybersecurity measures to protect citizen information.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu emphasized Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in adopting this innovative approach to governance, stating that it eliminates the need for citizens to visit government offices for many services. He has directed officials to maintain stringent data security protocols. Meta India has pledged its support to further improve the “Mana Mitra” WhatsApp services. The program was initially promised during the Yuvagalam Padayatra and formalized with an agreement between the state government and Meta in October 2022.
