**Muzaffarpur, Bihar:** A Bihar resident is demanding ₹50 lakh in compensation from the Indian Railways after he and his family missed the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj due to what he alleges was the railways’ negligence. Janak Kishore Jha, from Muzaffarpur’s Gayghat police station area, claims that despite having AC-3 tickets for the Swatantrata Senani Express on January 26th, he and his in-laws were unable to board the train because the coach door was locked from inside.
Jha alleges that despite repeated requests for help from railway staff and the Government Railway Police, no assistance was provided, and the train departed without them. He contends that missing the Maha Kumbh, a religiously significant event occurring after 144 years, caused him significant financial, emotional, and spiritual distress.
Through his lawyer, S.K. Jha, a legal notice has been sent to the Chairman and CEO of the Indian Railway Board demanding a refund of the ticket cost with interest within 15 days. Failure to comply, the notice warns, will result in legal action and a claim for ₹50 lakh in compensation under the Consumer Protection Act. The legal team argues that the railways failed in its duty to ensure passengers safely board their trains, leading to the complainant’s distress. The case hinges on the alleged deficiency in service provided by the Indian Railways.
