Wed Jan 29 23:58:16 UTC 2025: **Andhra Pradesh Minister Condemns State of Public Education, Unveils Reform Plan**
Vijayawada, January 30, 2025 – Andhra Pradesh’s IT and Human Resources Development Minister, N. Lokesh, has sharply criticized the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government for its handling of the state’s public education system, citing the dismal results of the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024.
The ASER 2024 report revealed that only 56% of Class 8 students in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana could read a Class 2 Telugu text, highlighting significant learning gaps, particularly in rural schools. Minister Lokesh attributed this to the YSRCP’s policies, claiming arbitrary government orders led to school closures, declining standards, and a lack of basic amenities like clean water and toilets. He also pointed to decreased student attendance and neglected teacher concerns.
In contrast, Lokesh praised the TDP’s previous administration, asserting that public schools then enjoyed higher educational standards, better attendance, improved infrastructure, and greater emphasis on extracurricular activities.
To address the current situation, Lokesh announced a series of initiatives undertaken in the past seven months, including data collection on student enrollment, curriculum reform to meet modern needs, and a focus on value-based education and extracurricular activities. He also highlighted efforts to resolve teacher issues and improve school infrastructure. The government plans to introduce a comprehensive “Andhra Pradesh Model of School Education,” seeking public and expert feedback for its development.
