Thu Jan 30 15:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Atlanta United Welcomes Back Star Midfielder Miguel Almirón

**Atlanta, GA –** Atlanta United FC announced the highly anticipated return of midfielder Miguel Almirón on a designated player contract through 2027, with an option for 2028. The move marks a homecoming for Almirón, a key figure in the club’s inaugural season and their 2018 MLS Cup victory.

Almirón, who initially played for Atlanta United from 2017-2018, departs from a successful six-year stint with Newcastle United in the English Premier League. His transfer to Newcastle in 2019 was a record-breaking move for MLS at the time. During his time in the Premier League, Almirón made 186 appearances, scoring 23 goals and adding 6 assists, culminating in a standout 2022-2023 season with 11 goals. His career highlights include scoring against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and a memorable goal against Chelsea at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during a Premier League summer tour, a match that showcased the strong bond he maintains with Atlanta fans.

“I feel so much warmth from the fans, and I have so much love for the fans as well,” Almirón said, reflecting on his emotional return to Atlanta.

Almirón’s impact on Atlanta United’s initial success was significant. In his two initial seasons, he scored 21 goals and added 22 assists. His electrifying pace and creative play quickly made him a fan favorite. He was a crucial part of the team’s 2018 MLS Cup triumph, alongside prolific teammate Josef Martínez.

Atlanta United’s Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director, Chris Henderson, expressed excitement about Almirón’s return, stating, “We’re thrilled to welcome Miguel back to Atlanta United and know we’re getting a top player and someone with excellent character.”

Almirón, now 30, joins a significantly changed Atlanta United team compared to the one he left. While only goalkeeper Brad Guzan remains from his previous tenure, the club is enthusiastic about the potential synergy between Almirón and other key players. He is expected to be integrated into head coach Ronny Deila’s attacking style of play immediately.

“I’m very happy to return to Atlanta United, a club and a city that has always held a special place in my heart,” Almirón said. “I’m grateful to Arthur M. Blank and the entire organization for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to reuniting with the fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and creating more moments of joy together.” Tickets for the 2025 season are currently on sale.
