Wed Jan 29 19:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Trump Signs Controversial Immigration Bill into Law, Sparking Outcry
**Washington, D.C.** – President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law Wednesday, marking a significant step in his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. The bill mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants accused of various crimes, including misdemeanors, before conviction, potentially leading to deportation.
The legislation, passed with bipartisan support but met with considerable Democratic opposition, was spurred by the 2024 murder of Laken Riley, a nursing student, by an undocumented immigrant who had previously been arrested for shoplifting but remained in the U.S. pending immigration proceedings.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the act, stating the administration aims to “enforce our nation’s immigration laws” by deporting individuals who enter the country illegally, overstay visas, or re-enter after deportation.
However, critics, including Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin, argue the bill is overly harsh and “un-American,” expanding mandatory detention to unprecedented levels for individuals accused of even minor offenses like shoplifting. Baldwin contends the measure prioritizes detaining those accused of petty crimes over focusing on more serious threats.
The law also allows state attorneys general to sue the federal government for perceived failures in immigration enforcement and grants states the ability to sue the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for alleged harm caused by illegal immigration.
Internal documents obtained by ABC News reveal that the bill’s enforcement costs are far higher than initially projected, potentially reaching $27 billion in its first year. Implementing the Act would require a massive expansion of ICE detention capacity, exceeding existing resources. This estimate does not include the costs of other immigration initiatives undertaken by the Trump administration.
These actions follow the signing of ten executive orders targeting illegal immigration and a DHS operation in New York City, led by newly confirmed Secretary Kristi Noem, resulting in the apprehension of several undocumented immigrants. Secretary Noem affirmed her commitment to securing the border and removing “criminal aliens and illegal gangs.” The Laken Riley Act, therefore, represents a key component of President Trump’s broader strategy to address illegal immigration.
