**Regina, SK** – Ticketmaster will pay out $6 million in a class-action settlement over hidden fees charged to Canadian customers in 2018, a Regina Court of King’s Bench ruling finalized last week revealed. The settlement affects approximately one million Canadians who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster between January 1 and June 30, 2018, for events within Canada (excluding Quebec).
The lawsuit, spearheaded by plaintiff Crystal Watch, alleged Ticketmaster engaged in “drip pricing,” deceptively adding fees to the displayed ticket price, violating The Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act. While Ticketmaster denied wrongdoing, the case settled before trial.
Eligible customers will receive up to $45 in Ticketmaster credit for future purchases. The credit is transferable but can only be used once. Watch received a $25,000 honorarium. Lawyers involved in the class-action suit will receive $1.725 million in fees.
Justice Graeme Mitchell noted that the case, while not a mega-settlement, serves as a significant consumer protection victory, viable only as a class-action. He justified the lawyers’ fees as an incentive for pursuing such complex claims.
Ticketmaster users who purchased tickets during the eligible period should receive an email from Ticketmaster shortly with instructions on claiming their credit. Those who don’t receive an email can contact the law firm of Tony Merchant, who represented the plaintiffs. Ticketmaster employees and Quebec residents are ineligible for compensation.
