Wed Jan 29 20:40:14 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Activist’s Murder Highlights Rampant Mining Mafia Violence

**Madurai, Tamil Nadu –** The murder of Jagaber Ali, a 58-year-old social activist and AIADMK functionary, has ignited outrage in Tamil Nadu and renewed calls for stronger protection of whistleblowers. Ali, who actively campaigned against illegal stone quarrying in Pudukkottai district, was killed in what initially appeared to be a road accident on January 17th. However, his wife’s suspicion of foul play led to an investigation, resulting in the arrest of five individuals linked to a local quarry.

The case, initially filed under a lesser charge, was upgraded to murder after an investigation. The subsequent transfer of the case to the CB-CID and the suspension of a local police inspector and transfer of revenue officials highlight the alleged inaction that allowed the crime to occur.

Ali’s death is not an isolated incident. The murder has reignited concerns over the unchecked power of the mining mafia in Tamil Nadu, which has a history of targeting those who challenge its activities. Similar attacks have claimed the lives of other activists and officials in the past, including a village administrative officer in 2023 and a police constable in 2018. These attacks often take the form of hit-and-run incidents, making prosecution difficult.

Environmental activists and political figures have condemned the murder and called for a new law to protect whistleblowers. Henri Tiphagne of People’s Watch highlighted the ongoing threat to activists and the collaborative nature of the illegal operations, involving various stakeholders. While the AIADMK has demanded action, the DMK’s response has been comparatively muted, fueling further criticism. The incident underscores the urgent need for stronger political will and decisive action to dismantle the powerful mining mafia and ensure the safety of those who fight against illegal activities.
