Thu Jan 30 15:00:00 UTC 2025: ## GitHub Copilot Goes Free: Now Available in JetBrains IDEs and VS Code
**London, UK** – GitHub has made its popular AI coding assistant, Copilot, freely available to individual users. The free version, previously announced for VS Code, has now expanded to include support for all compatible JetBrains IDEs, including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and others.
This move comes as GitHub boasts 150 million developers on its platform. The free tier offers limited access to Copilot’s features and requires only a GitHub account; no subscriptions or credit cards are needed. Users can interact with Copilot conversationally, similar to ChatGPT, and can even switch between different large language models (LLMs) available on the GitHub Marketplace. While some models, such as IBM’s Granite, are not yet included, the marketplace is constantly updated.
A helpful tutorial from Microsoft demonstrates how to build a client-server application using Copilot, .NET, and Visual Studio in under 45 minutes. The free offering is aimed at individual developers who don’t have access to Copilot through their organization. Users can upgrade to the Pro version for access to a wider range of features.
