Thu Jan 30 16:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Telangana Government Raises Retirement Age for University Professors
**Hyderabad, India** – The Telangana state government has announced a significant increase in the retirement age for university professors. Effective immediately, the retirement age will be raised from 60 to 65 years, according to a government order issued today.
This decision comes in response to a proposal from the state’s higher education council, highlighting a severe shortage of faculty across the state’s 12 universities. Currently, only 757 professors are employed across 2,817 sanctioned positions, leaving a staggering 73% of professorial posts vacant. The shortage is particularly acute, with several universities reporting a critical lack of faculty in key areas, impacting exam administration and academic leadership roles. For instance, the University of Osmania’s education department has only two professors remaining, who are forced to shoulder multiple administrative responsibilities.
The government hopes that extending the retirement age will alleviate the immediate staffing crisis and provide some stability to the higher education system in Telangana. The long-term solution, however, will require addressing the underlying issue of attracting and retaining qualified professors.
