Thu Jan 30 15:08:17 IST 2025: ## Congress MP Arrested, BJP Wins Chandigarh Mayor Election, Tata Motors Profits Dip

**Chandigarh, India** – A busy news day saw a Congress MP arrested, a BJP victory in the Chandigarh mayoral election, and a significant drop in Tata Motors’ quarterly profits.

Rakesh Rathore, a Congress Member of Parliament, was arrested by police during a press conference. He is facing allegations of sexual harassment, with further legal action expected against two former officials. The next hearing in a related “land for job” case is scheduled for February 7th.

In local politics, the BJP secured a win in the Chandigarh mayoral elections, narrowly defeating a combined opposition of AAP and Congress by a margin of three cross-votes.

Meanwhile, Tata Motors announced a 22% decline in its third-quarter profits, falling to ₹5,451 crore (approximately $658 million USD). The decrease is attributed to weaker margins and a slowdown in Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sales. While overall revenue saw a slight improvement, EBITDA margin dropped by 60 basis points to 13.7%. JLR, despite record revenue, also experienced a decline in pre-tax profit. The company remains cautious about the impact of slowing demand in China. Tata Motors’ electric vehicle sales, however, saw a 19% year-on-year increase, although the phasing out of the FAME II subsidy impacted fleet sales. The company expressed optimism for improved demand in the future, citing increased infrastructure investment and new product launches.
