Thu Jan 30 14:09:10 IST 2025: ## Tamil Nadu to Challenge Supreme Court Ruling on PG Medical Reservations

**Chennai, January 30, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government will file a review petition against a recent Supreme Court ruling that deemed residence-based reservations in postgraduate medical courses unconstitutional. Health Minister Ma. Subramanian announced the move on Thursday, following consultations with legal experts.

The Supreme Court’s decision impacts Tamil Nadu’s 69% reservation policy, which allocates 50% of postgraduate (PG) medical seats to students from the state. Minister Subramanian stressed the importance of this quota for social justice and warned that the ruling could cost the state at least 1,200 PG medical seats annually. Currently, 2,294 PG seats are available, with 1,200 reserved for Tamil Nadu residents. The Minister highlighted that the state boasts excellent healthcare infrastructure and a significant number of PG medical seats.

The ruling, he explained, threatens not only the state’s existing reservation policy but also the admissions in private and minority institutions. He emphasized that the state government bears the cost of developing the infrastructure for these PG courses and therefore cannot accept the court’s decision. While the ruling will not affect this year’s admissions, the state government will actively work to protect its rights through the review petition. The Minister also pointed out a past struggle to retain reservation for in-service doctors in super-specialty courses, a battle they eventually won. The existing 50% allocation to the All India Quota (AIQ) further complicates the situation, with students from other states already occupying a significant portion of seats.
