**GOLETA, CA –** A small private plane crashed in an open field near Highway 101 in Goleta this afternoon, injuring two people. Emergency personnel responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. after witnesses reported seeing black smoke from the crash site, visible from several miles away.
According to Santa Barbara County Fire spokesperson Captain Scott Safechuck, the plane, carrying a 29-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, crashed causing a small vegetation fire. Both passengers sustained major injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 2:39 p.m.
Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Raquel Zick urged the public to avoid the area near Storke Road to allow emergency responders to work. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to investigate the cause of the crash. The extent of the injuries to the passengers is currently unknown.
