Wed Jan 29 23:50:00 IST 2025: ## Starbucks Aims for “Back to Starbucks” Overhaul to Revive Sales

**Seattle, WA** – Facing four consecutive quarters of declining sales, Starbucks is undergoing a major transformation aimed at winning back customers. New CEO Brian Niccol, recruited from Chipotle for his turnaround expertise, has launched the “Back to Starbucks” initiative, focusing on simplifying the customer experience and returning to the chain’s local coffee house roots.

The plan includes a significant menu reduction, with approximately 30% of food and beverage options slated for removal by late 2025. This streamlining, according to Niccol, will allow for quicker service, greater responsiveness to trends (like the recent Dubai Matcha craze), and more space for barista-driven innovations. The company is aiming for a four-minute drink delivery time in most stores, facilitated by upgraded equipment and improved mobile ordering.

To enhance the in-store experience, Starbucks has reintroduced ceramic mugs, free refills for coffee and tea (for dine-in customers), and self-serve condiment bars. The company has also eliminated extra charges for non-dairy milks, a move Niccol claims has already attracted lapsed rewards members. The signature barista-written notes on cups have returned, while bathroom access is once again restricted to paying customers.

While the specific menu items to be cut remain undisclosed, the olive-oil Oleato coffee has already been removed. Niccol described the current menu as overwhelming for both customers and baristas.

The initiative also aims to improve employee satisfaction, with Niccol aiming to make Starbucks the “unrivaled best job in retail.” However, the company continues to face challenges in its relationship with unionized workers, with collective bargaining agreements yet to be reached at over 500 unionized stores. Niccol has announced plans for corporate layoffs by March, and has brought in several former executives from his previous roles at Taco Bell and Chipotle. The changes represent a significant gamble for Starbucks as it seeks to reclaim its market position.
